What's in a Name?
Our name reflects our focus on research-led natural resource management, environmental restoration, consultation and our New Zealand expertise.
'Ara' means 'path' in Maori, the indigenous language of New Zealand. 'Novus' means 'new' in Latin, the language of science and the basis of modern English. Together, a 'new path' is the aim of sustainable natural resource management and environmental restoration and is often the driver for changes in how people interact with their environment.
We focus on 'Innovative environmental solutions' that benefit people as successful ecological outcomes move us closer to an environmentally sustainable future.
Our logo reflects our holistic and integrated approach to sustainable natural resource management and environmental solutions.
The icons of animals, plants, land and water represent the key resources of functioning ecosystems. They also reference New Zealand's place on Earth as the nikau palm is only found in New Zealand and is the most southern palm in the world. New Zealand is also a land of birds.
For ecosystems to function well, these resources must fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. Ecological restoration can restore these linkages where natural resource degradation has caused disturbance. Intact and functioning ecosystems provide all the natural resources and processes our society relies upon.
Our name and our logo define us.
